Kings Meadows sits in the floor of a shallow valley about seventy metres above sea level, and the whole suburb drains north-east towards Punchbowl. On a valley floor, where the water goes is not a detail. It is the job.

Much of Kings Meadows went up through the 1950s and 60s, which means a lot of the concrete we are asked to look at is sixty years old and was never poured for two cars. Widening usually means a new crossover as well.
The flat is genuinely useful. Trucks get close, machines drive in, and the excavation is a strip rather than a cut. It keeps the cost down compared with the hill suburbs across town.
Where water sits, the ground under a slab stays soft for longer. We take the topsoil right off and put crushed rock down in compacted layers rather than raking it level and hoping.
